Native Xeriscape Garden
Bozeman, Montana
This compact residential garden was transformed from an all-lawn yard into a vibrant, plant-species rich, low-water landscape. The planting palette is full of native wildflower species that support local ecology, requires no irrigation, and has year-round seasonal interest. Blooms start in early spring when there is always a chance of snow through the end of summer. Vibrant red twig dogwood add color in the dead of winter.
The client entertains often in the summer. Plantings and concrete masonry create natural divisions within the space for program elements: a fire pit and various lounge seating areas. A concrete board formed wall serves multiple
purposes: a continuous seat — one section has been designed for a wood insert that matches a long custom wood table, an enclosure for her small dog, and as a strong design move that gives the garden form.
The garden also exceeds city standards for sustainability and low-impact development, integrating stormwater management to reduce its environmental footprint.
